The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress – Part 13: “World Building Badness”

March 31, 2009 23 comments

dftitle13I’ve written a book – Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress, coming to O’Reilly soon! It covers the current version and takes you from knowing nothing to being a confident Dwarf Fortress player!

Welcome to the tutorial that was never meant to be! The 13th Tutorial, by popular request, on world building. If you’ve played along with our tutorial so far you may be itching to try out making your own world and finding a new place to build your next dwarfy citadel (perfectly laid out – as detailed on the notepaper you doodled on at work all day). Well, you’re in luck, because that’s what we’re talking about today!

A tutorial on custom party settings (organising what your dwarfs embark with) will come some time after this one, scout’s honour. Read more…

Armageddon Empires – First Game AAR

March 26, 2009 Leave a comment

armageddon-empiresArmageddon Empires has been featured here before, but I liked this AAR from OctopusOverlords a lot so I figured I’d let you all know about it as well. The AAR sees forum poster Quitch learn through playing, and what better way for us to learn about the game than through the failings of someone else! Go read!

Dar al-Islam: A Barbary States Empire Total War AAR – Part 1

March 22, 2009 10 comments

barbary_states_empire_total_war_logoEmpire: Total War is fun, but playing as England, Prussia, France or Spain is a bit easy really. So many provinces, so many troops to build, so much money! So instead of going easy, and to provide an interesting AAR, I unlocked the minor nations and decided to play the Barbary States. Why this rag-tag bunch of North African pirates? For two reasons:

  1. I want to play as pirates! Duh!
  2. I want to convert Europe to Islam!

…And I also thought it would be quite funny if I could pull it off. Sure enough, it has been amusing, but also really hard. Read on for the first 20 years of the rise of the Barbary States! Read more…

Jagged Alliance 2 AAR

March 21, 2009 Leave a comment

Jagged Alliance 2 is a game that I somehow missed, but looking back at this AAR, think perhaps I missed out on something. Thankfully, there’s a great Jagged Alliance 2 AAR over on OctopusOverlords and try and resist rushing off to Steam to buy a copy.

AAR – Space Rangers 2: Arthur Stone and the Rusty Nail

March 18, 2009 Leave a comment

Space Ranger 2, like Dwarf Fortress, is one of those odd little games that everyone should try. Part adventure, space trading, action, tactical and RTS game, Space Rangers 2 see’s the player explore and adventure in a vast, amusing universe. In this AAR Robin Burkinshaw tries to do something a little different…

…this time I wanted to try something a little different. I decided that I would try a crazy plan I’d had the last time I played, but never seriously put into practice.

I would become the best space ranger in the galaxy. But I would do it by assassinating every ranger above me in the rankings.

Go have a read and enjoy the strange tale of Arthur Stone and the Rusty Nail.

Conduit, Battlefront toolbar people, reply

March 17, 2009 Leave a comment

tow2-a5-tnSo it wasn’t a bot, but instead one of the Conduit staffers who got in touch in the end. In case you’re wondering what this is all about Conduit are the people behind the Battlefront Community Tool Bar that, by default, is installed with every Battlefront demo or patch (yes, patches too!).

It’s an interesting email and I thought I would reproduce it here in full to highlight the fact that, by all accounts, the tool bar is entirely benign (something I found as well). That being said, I still find it a strange sort of marketing tool for Battlefront to use, and they deliver it in a strange way. Anyway, here’s the email: Read more…

Lend me your Dwarf Fortress stories!

March 16, 2009 16 comments

dwarffortresstitleBy now many of you (thousands by my count) will have started a fortress, perhaps for the very first time. And no doubt something disasterous has happened, like monkeys stole all your tools or you accidently flooded the fortress with water, magma, or better yet, both! While such events are heartbreaking for you after hours put into a fortress, the rest of us find them really funny. So why not do us a favour and mail them in? We will post the best in a compilation of short annecdotes from the tutorials and hey, we all might learn something too! Email editors@afteractionreporter.com and let us know what has been happening in your fortress.

Oh, look for tutorials on glass and world generation in the next few weeks!

Theater of War 2 demo + Adware. Available now!

March 15, 2009 1 comment

tow2-a5-tnWord on the street is that the Theater of War 2 demo is out! I was planning on playing and writing up a bit of an AAR along with impressions, but before I’d even got it installed I noticed an interesting observation from forum poster flyinj on QuarterToThree.com. What he observed is that when you install the demo (or, reportedly, just about anything from Battlefront), the demo wants to install a “Battlefront Toolbar”. “Toolbar?” I hear you say. Yes, those things that were all the vogue for marketing companies back in 2003 and are now considered homes of spyware, adware and general evilness. So what’s the story with this thing? Read on for our analysis. Read more…

Theme change, E:TW Barbary States, other news!

March 13, 2009 Leave a comment

I’m chargin’ mah laze… er, nope, I’m changing ma theme! That’s right. Theme change time. I want to make this place a bit easier to read and so I think a theme change is in order. I’m also working on a Barbary States AAR for Empire: Total War. The Barbary States were a fascinating collection of pirate cities that were active right up until 1830.  In E:TW I can’t get the rest of Europe to pay me money not to pirate from them (diplomacy is not so subtle in E:TW), but I can conquer the whole world! Or at least, I can try!

And finally, welcome to everyone who has turned up from Penny Arcade! Hope you enjoy the Dwarf Fortress tutorials.
