March 13, 2009 3 comments

dwarffortresstitleSome may say, “Why play Dwarf Fortress?”, “It’s too hard and I don’t like the graphics!”,  or “What’s so special about this game?”. How does one answer these people? The best answer, I believe, is presented by Damien Neil from over on QuarterToThree.com, read on… Read more…

Empire: Total War – All factions unlocked!

*WARNING* This mod is now months old and may not work with a current version of E:TW. I suggest visiting the linked sites and having a poke around for more recent mods before you install this one, just in case! And always back up, you can back up *WARNING*

It’s a mere few days since Empire: Total War was released and already the moders over on twcenter.net have worked out how to unlock all of the minor powers! Want to play Savoy? The Barbary states? American Indian nations? Now you can! It’s early days for the mod so there are some issues, but when I tried it there were no major problems. In particular, the Italian states seem quite full-featured in terms of intro text and goals, almost as if they were cut at the last minute.

Sadly, the pirates, while playable, and fairly unplayable, due to everyone being permanently at war with them and a stacking limit of six for units and ships. Hopefully they will iron that one out in due course as who doesn’t want to play a pirate nation!? I’m tempted to do a very piratey AAR for the Barbary coast state as I think it could be quite amusing.

Why are wargames so expensive?

March 8, 2009 7 comments

Recently Gabe Newell of Valve/Steam spoke about the price of games and how the sales of games on Steam had changed as prices were cut for promotions. Gabe mentions a few examples, but a striking one was how a promotional price cut of 50% for Left 4 Dead, from $50 to $25 resulted in a 3,000% increase in sales! Should there be lessons in Gabe’s stats for wargame developers and publishers? Read more…

In this tutorial we’ll cover some broader fortress design questions, stuff that I’ve previously forgotten to mention and thoughts about fortifications. Oh, I’ll do a wrap-up post with links to more resources some time after this post comes out. Ok! Lets get to it! Read more…

Combat Mission AAR’s

March 4, 2009 Leave a comment

We’ve had a few articles here on After Action Reporter about Combat Mission, but we’ve yet to have a link to any specific example of one of the AAR’s based out of this game.

Time to rectify that.

June of last year brought about GameZone’s Combat Mission AAR competition, where users could submit video’s of their missions, and then be judged later on.  These video’s were archived on a youtube page.   You can find the link below. YouTube Page

RPS: Bangalore Galore – An Empire: Total War AAR

March 2, 2009 Leave a comment

empire_total_war_aarThere’s a short and sweet AAR for Empire: Total War over on Rock Paper Shotgun. Covering a battle between a player fighting as the Maratha Confederacy and the AI controlled Mysorians. If you’re familiar with the Total War series you won’t see much new here, but the graphics are sexy and the scope of E:TW exciting. So many nations to play and so many adventures to be had! Even better, word on the street is that there will be a multiplayer strategy game patch in the future which will allow 1 on 1 playing of the strategy game, great! We look forward to some interesting multiplayer AARs in the future.
