New version of Dwarf Fortress with Mayday tileset!
April 2, 2010
At long last the new version of Dwarf Fortress has been released! You can get it from the Dwarf Fortress website, but if you are like me and love the MayGreen tileset then have no fear, you can get it from here. The final Mediafire link, “newest fixed version” is probably the one you want. I have had it up and running and it works fine in windowed mode, not so good in full screen.
If you are wondering what changes are incorporated in the new version then read this Google Docs change log. And for anyone wondering, I am considering doing a whole new tutorial series but I am not sure it is required. Let me know your thoughts on the matter, if you have any.

Yes please, I’m not sure if the tutorial is needed for people (like myself) that have already learned the old version from your old tutorials (awsome work, thanks). But if anybody new to the game comes across the old tutorials they might get a bit confused!
When’s toady going to intergrate stonesense already!!
Your tutorial brought me into this game. Without you i would have never grasped the game concepts. So i think all the potential new players would be happy to have an updated version of your tutorial.
I think an updated tutorial would be excellent, if you have the time to do one. The reason your tutorial is so great, is because new players can download the save file and play along while reading it. This isn’t possible with the new version, since the file isn’t compatible.
So if you have the time and inclination, I’m sure a lot of new players would appreciate it, although it’s perfectly understandable if you don’t do it.
It seems like you wouldn’t have too much to redo, but if you updated the pertinent bits that would be really awesome.
Some new tutorials would be awesome!
A new tutorial is probably not going to be required, but heavy tweaking of the current tutorials will be, with an additional single tutorial for medical care. For instance, in the current release you cannot farm without irrigation underground (not sure if that’s a bug though) and that will definitely confuse players.
I also recomend changing out the pre-packaged May Green release in the tutorial for a link to the May Green site (or in this case the DF wiki until an official one is released) and then linking a save file for use in the tutorial.
A tutorial on the new medical, military and burrow parts of the game would be cool.
I think a new tutorial with May Day packaged would be excellent. I would have never understood Dwarf Fortress without you, and I frequently show people your guide when I want to introduce them to the game. I also think if it would be possible, to introduce fighting earlier into the tutorial, as I was very confused with it. I also continue to use your tutorial very often when I forget the controls after a long time of not playing.
Yeah, good idea on the fighting bit! It is confusing, worse now (although more powerul) and you do need to get training a few militia in your first year or risk being wiped by an early raid.
I don’t know if a redo is needed or not (haven’t gotten around to installing the new version yet) but if you wrote it, I would read it. That’s is for sure.
Hi TinyPirate! I really enjoyed all your stories and tutorial about DF… I hope you will create a new set of tutorials once again!
I really enjoyed your first tutorial series. It brought me back to DF. However, with the new version, especially with the military management and the new noble positions, I’m having a real hard time. Maybe, a few tutorials on those aspects which have undergone significant changes but are crucial to survival would be a great idea.
Yeah. The wiki does help a lot in that regard but there are bugs and complexities in the new version which really don’t make it very easy to work out.
What makes it particularly hard, is the fact that the Wiki still is rather sketchy about the new features. I can only extract information about what is possible and how, in general, the configurations should interact. But, since it is at best distantly related to the former mechanisms, i didn’t yet manage to transfer my old procedures to the new version.
yeah please do a new tutorial, learned how off your tutorial but didnt have enough time to properly get to grips with it before 2010 came out and confused me all over
You definitely have to do a tutorial on the new military system, I can’t understand it no matter how many times I read the wiki!
PLEASE I learned to play DF because of YOU!
🙂 Your tutorials are the best, so pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!
a update summarizing and explaining the new mechanics would be great
if it comes down to it you could write a short intro just to explain how to get started (ie stuff necessary to survive early game) and just have people refer to the old guide
I found your first tutorials super useful. If it weren’t for them I certainly would not have continued to enjoy Dwarf Fortress as much as I do.
Like others have said before, a new tutorial explaining the new features would be very useful. I just downloaded the newest release and am very nervous that I am about to get my first few fortress’s destroyed very quickly, but then again, losing is fun.
Good attitude! I will write more tutorials once the 2010 version hits a stable build.
i’m trying 2 get into dwarf fortress, but all the tutorials are 4 old versions and just confuse me evn more, also ur .rar from old walkthru won’t run on my vista PC 4 sum reason
Great tutorials – I would love to see an updated version as the new version requires you to irrigate before you can farm and I have no idea how to! The wiki hints at the new features, but completely stumps me.
Your tutorials (which I found through Rock, Paper, Shotgun btw) are excellent. Even if you don’t get around to writing new tutorials, thanks for the ones you have written. Maybe a summary tutorial covering the changes?
Dwarf Fortress is completely overwhelming to a newbie like me, I sense an awesome game in there, I just can’t even get past the absolute basics and even then that is entirely thanks to you 🙂
Cheers,
Gobion
Thanks – once we’ve got a stable DF version I’ll do some kind of update I think.

I clicked the link and couldn’t find the mayday version. I also checked the tileset repository. Do you know any other places to find it?
Nevermind, I found another download. Now my problem is Dwarf Manager. Is it not compatable with the new version?
Unsure. And aren’t we all using Dwarf Therapist now? I would google that and see how you go.
I had never heard of Dwarf Therapist before. I googled it and it looks even better than Dwarf Manager; unfortunately it appears that the latest version of it is not compatable with the latest version of Dwarf Fortress.
I heard this “You need this: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2822 for it to work with the newest version.” Not sure if that’s true or not, but worth a shot.
I would love a new tutorial.
Mike – what I am missing with the mayday link (I’m not seeing anything to DL on that page)
Don’t worry about it. If you need graphics and stuff for any newer version go Google up the lazy newb pack.
