Solium Infernum tutorial – awesome!

December 9, 2009 Comments off

Dave Perkins from QuarterToThree forums (and who knows where else!) has created a fantastic wee tutorial for Solium Infernum. If you’d like to get a great overview of the game, have a look! It is very visual, very witty and a good read. Go read and then go buy this clever indie game! Oh, and a multiplayer AAR will be here in the next few weeks!

Solium Infernum – Best little strategy game of ’09?

December 4, 2009 3 comments

The just-released Solium Infernum seems to be making a lot of waves as the greatest wee strategy game release of 2009. At its core it’s a game where you control a demon battling to become the boss of hell. But battling is more than pew pew, it also involve political games, rituals, magic items, and more! Perhaps best of all the game is very much designed to be a play-by-email experience, which is awesome for those of us who miss slow-time multiplayer gaming! Go check out the demo, read a review, and give it a go!

Attacker Down: BloodBowl AAR website!

July 19, 2009 1 comment

bloodbowltitleRecently I’ve been quite addicted to the new Cyanide Studios version of BloodBowl. It’s really rather awesome. You can only get it on digital download for now, but if you love good strategy games and good RPG themes, you’ll love BloodBowl!

But anyway, on with my point, one of the esteemed QuarterToThree posters has created a website devoted to BloodBowl AARs and league reports. Attacker Down is his site, and I recommend going to have a look. If you check his match reports section you can see YouTubes of various league games as well as comments. Now, if only I can convince him to work on some sort of collaborative commentary project! Wouldn’t that be a great way to do an AAR?

Complete Dwarf Fortress tutorials in one big PDF!

June 3, 2009 9 comments

dwarffortresstitleAt last! After much time we have a full PDF of the Complete and Utter Newby Tutorials for Dwarf Fortress on Scribd! You can thank Joe Yeti for this great work, he just up and made the PDF and dropped it into my lap. Right now the links don’t work in the PDF, but it’s perfect for printing and playing along! Enjoy! If you don’t like to use Scribd, you can download the full PDF here.

Note: The PDF is not as up to date as the tutorials here on the web (as they have had some tweaks) so if you can, please consider working through the web-based tutorials.

The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress – Part 14: “Embarking… to your doom!”

June 2, 2009 46 comments

I’ve written a book – Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress, available at O’Reilly and Amazon! It covers the current version and takes you from knowing nothing to being a confident Dwarf Fortress player!

A while ago I promised a final tutorial (although I’m always open for to pleading for more) on how to use the custom embark feature of Dwarf Fortress. This is a handy part of the game as it lets you customize exactly what sort of dwarfs you take with you and allows you to set their supplies to your exact specifications. Read on for more information! Read more…

The most tragic DF story ever!

April 8, 2009 1 comment

dwarffortresstitleOver at we’ve been running a succession game called “Quakebells“. We have some odd rules, first up, all dwarfs are heretics and believe that it is sinful to live underground. Second, there must be a sacrifice of a dwarf every autumn to ensure that the sun comes back for spring. It’s only logical, right? Read more…

Dwarf Fortress Story Submission

April 3, 2009 2 comments

dwarffortresstitleWe’ve had a great submission from a player about their first “proper” fortress (post-tutorial, I am guessing). It covers the epic fall of the fortress and provides some slight spoilers about the “happy fun stuff” that exists in DF. Anyway, here it is in full, thanks Ben! Read more…
