I’ve written a book – Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress, available at O’Reilly and Amazon! It covers the current version and takes you from knowing nothing to being a confident Dwarf Fortress player!

A while ago I promised a final tutorial (although I’m always open for to pleading for more) on how to use the custom embark feature of Dwarf Fortress. This is a handy part of the game as it lets you customize exactly what sort of dwarfs you take with you and allows you to set their supplies to your exact specifications. Welcome to the tutorial that was never meant to be! The 13th Tutorial, by popular request, on world building. If you’ve played along with our tutorial so far you may be itching to try out making your own world and finding a new place to build your next dwarfy citadel (perfectly laid out – as detailed on the notepaper you doodled on at work all day). Well, you’re in luck, because that’s what we’re talking about today!

A tutorial on custom party settings (organising what your dwarfs embark with) will come some time after this one, scout’s honour. Read more…

As promised, the final Dwarf Fortress tutorial from me! That is, unless you demand more. In this tutorial we’ll cover some broader fortress design questions, stuff that I’ve previously forgotten to mention and thoughts about fortifications. Oh, I’ll do a wrap-up post with links to more resources some time after this post comes out. Ok! Lets get to it! Read more…

While you’re exploring and digging around (see Tutorial 9) how about we set up a military? You’re going to need one, goblins are pesky bastards and likely to bother you more and more (if they haven’t already). Soldiers can be a bit fiddly to manipulate, but once you get the hang of it you’ll find it second nature. Read more…

You’ve come a long way, padawan, but don’t worry, I won’t let any stupid angsty teenager come and strike you down because he’s in a tizzy having lost his mum! No, nothing of the sort! Baby Dwarf Fortress managers like yourself will prosper and grow strong like a seedling, going on to bear nice dwarven fruit. And not the Class-C sort of fruit that gets picked and sold on the streets, no, nice, rare, delicious fruit! Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, tutorial 9, Nobles and other layabouts. Get on with it!
