HoI3 Republican Spain AAR
CSL has started a Hearts of Iron 3 Spanish Republic AAR over on QuarterToThree.com. The AAR looks great so far, although I have reservations about HoI3 itself at this stage. I’ll write one too if I ever pick it up, but that won’t be for a few patches and possibly an expansion at this rate!
Hearts of Iron 3 demo and manual!
Great news! Hearts of Iron 3 has a demo out – and a huge manual. Best place to get the demo is from this Swedish games site with a nice, quick torrent and the manual is available from the HoI3 forum. If you’d prefer a more standard download, try queuing over here, and why not read the quick start guide while you wait!
Battles from the Bulge will feature a demo!
I’ve been a bit of fan of Conquest of the Aegean and I’m looking forward to Battles from the Bulge, the sequel to COTA by Panther Games. One issue people had with COTA was that it was a full-priced game and relatively unusual; plenty of gamers were reluctant to drop the cash to try it out. But never fear! Arjuna, a Panther Games developer, has informed fans that there will be a demo for Battles from the Bulge! At last, the curious will get a chance to try Panther Games’ unique take on strategy and the fans will be able to endlessly bug their friends to give the game a go.
Theater of War 2 demo – Tutorial AAR
So I got around to trying the Theater of War 2 demo and thought I would provide my impressions via the AAR format. I’m new to the Theater of War series but had heard that this episode would be the one to watch for. Lets see if that’s true… Read more…
Hearts of Iron 3 video presentations at GDC
A lot of people are looking forward to Hearts of Iron 3, which blends Paradox’s love of historical detail with the fun of a hell of a lot of war! If you’re interested in HOI3, or just love a good strategy game, head on over to GameReactor to watch two videos where HOI3 was presented to a journalist at the recent GDC conference. The Paradox staffer takes the journo through the early years of playing Norway including a campaign he undertakes to liberate Sweden!
Combat Mission AAR’s
We’ve had a few articles here on After Action Reporter about Combat Mission, but we’ve yet to have a link to any specific example of one of the AAR’s based out of this game.
Time to rectify that.
June of last year brought about GameZone’s Combat Mission AAR competition, where users could submit video’s of their missions, and then be judged later on. These video’s were archived on a youtube page. You can find the link below. YouTube Page
Combat Mission Campaigns cancelled
According to a thread over on battlefront.com Combat Mission Campaigns has been canceled. The reason provided is that it was too hard for the small team to develop and it was costing too much compared to the likely return. Sad news really, CMC promised to be an interesting game and an interesting way to play Combat Mission.
Battles from the Bulge AAR: The Losheim Gap
We’ve previously listed Battles from the Bulge as one of the games we’re looking forward to. With that in mind I think it’s appropriate to link through to a completed AAR on the BFTB forum. It should give you a pretty good idea of the sort of game BFTB is and how it differs from Conquest of the Aegean. Enjoy!
Theater of War 2 AARs and videos
When Theater of War was first announced I was working at Codemasters, which was due to be the game’s publisher. The wargame geeks among us were very excited, TOW seemed to offer all the groggy geekiness of Combat Mission combined with great visuals, and we were going to get to see it first! But after some delays the game ended up being published by Battlefront instead, gathering mixed reviews in the process.
Six or so years on from those early Codemasters days Theater of War 2 is on the horizon, and I’m quietly optimistic that the problems with the first version will be fixed. Read more…
Conquest of the Aegean AARs
Earlier this year I picked up Conquest of the Aegean, a fantastic wargame from a Australian developer Panther Games. COTA, as it is known among fans, is a wargame which takes advantage of that magnificent technological innovation called “computers”. In COTA, Panther Games have done away with the table-top wargaming ideas of turns and hexes in favour of realistic, move anywhere maps and pausable-real time.
But COTA is no RTS click-fest. For my money it’s the most realistic simulation of operational warfare you can buy. COTA is replete with a realistic chain of command and orders system, the intelligent use of formations, detailed ORBATs and complex yet believable combat resolution.
But COTA is not without its learning curve. Read more…
